Day 7

London

Late start today. Getting a little tired I think. Did the really tourist thing today. Westminster, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St James's Gardens, County Hall and The Embankment. Met Laura in the very interesting Gordon's Wine Bar for wine and cheese. Then a quick look around the Covent Garden area followed by dinner, at 6.00pm, at Cantina Loredo, Covent Garden, an excellent but expensive, Mexican Restaurant. The margaritas were wonderful but a £9 each.....
London is so full of tourists at this time of year. So different to when we were here in January 1986. The trains are so crowded. Just like Japanese trains really. We think our trains are crowded? But at least here they come every 5 minutes or so.
Lord's tomorrow.

Day 6

Another busy day in London. Met Laura for brunch in Brixton. What a grungy, culturally diverse place Brixton is. This area has a distinctively West Indian feel but is well served by a range of cafes and restaurants, all with a dilapidated, neglected look but with good food and coffee.
Next we went to the Columbia Road Flower Market. What an experience that was. And I thought the Portobello Road Markets were overcrowded. The flower markets were amazing, not so much for the flowers and plants on sale but more so for the vast numbers of people that go to buy flowers. And I am told it is the same every Sunday. It was so crowded and uncomfortable. I just didn't get it.
After the flower markets we went back to Notting Hill and Portobello Road for another look (not so busy today) and had an early dinner at one of the many Notting Hill pubs. Bangers and mash for me and a couple of pints. Tiring day after a late night last night so early to bed tonight.

Day 5

We had a great day today. Portobello Road Markets in the morning. Great market with antiques, "retro" clothing, food and all sorts of other s..t.
Great atmosphere, but oh so crowded. It was really crazy with more people than can actually fit. Had to get out before it became unbareable. Lucky we are staying nearby.
Sunny day today so we had lunch on our terrace watching the crowds go by. Bread, cheese, salami, chorizo, and mortella from an Italian Deli plus some olives and other things from the markets. Wonderful!
Tonight we visited Laura at her coffee shop, "Department of Coffee and Social Affairs" and then went to her bar " The Piano Works" for drinks and dinner. Piano Works is a great spot, typical of London bars (so I am told) with live music (not bad) simple food (I had a softshell crab sandwich) and plenty of drinks. Good, relaxing, non-threatening atmosphere. But very expensive by Australian standards.
Got Oyster Cards and travelled the train and bus systems a few times today. Pretty convenient and affordable. Buses and trains very frequent, even today, Saturday.

Not a lot to report today. About 14 hours in the air with Emirates via Dubai. Flights were good, airport experiences were good and we arrived at our accommodation in Notting Hill without incident. We think we are going to enjoy our stay in Notting Hill. Looks to be a fantastic location. Tomorrow we will start exploring London again. Not been here since 1986 so lots to catch up on. And tomorrow we catch up with Laura, YAY!
To bed now, very tired.

Singapore Zoo today. Not sure what I expected but I expected more from this highly rated zoo. It's a very good zoo but I just expected something better. Loved the Orangutans!
London tomorrow.
